Plea seeks to fix rules for advocates of VVIP litigants

CHENNAI: The High Court adjourned a petition seeking to fix the maximum number of advocates who can appear or accompany the VIP/VVIP litigant in subordinate courts. Petitioner N Mahendra Babu, moved the HC to direct the registrar general to frame rules to limit number of advocates appearing for the VIP/ VVIP litigants and public in the subordinate courts. The case was listed before the bench comprising Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice PD Audikesavalu. On July 14, the State BJP chief K Annamalai appeared in the Saidapet court to a defamation case filed by DMK treasurer TR Balu MP. During appearance as many as 200 advocates accompanied with party lawyer Paul Kanagaraj and virtually made it look like a stampede inside and outside the court complex, said the petitioner. He also pointed out the incident happened in HC in Feb 2009, when Subramanian Swamy appeared in the court which resulted in a havoc. The counsel who appeared for the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar council sought time to file counter. Accepting submission the bench posted the matter to November 11 for further hearing.
