Techie, bike taxi rider among 3 held for sexual harassment in city

CHENNAI: The police arrested three men, including a software engineer and a bike taxi rider, for sexually harassment in separate cases.

Police on Sunday arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly misbehaving with a lady doctor at a clinic in Kotturpuram. The 40-yearold doctor, a resident RA Puram, is working as a doctor in a government hospital in Chennai and is also working part-time at a clinic in her neighbourhood.

When she was on duty at the clinic on Friday night, the accused who came to visit her allegedly wrote obscene words on her prescription pad and engaged in sexual harassment. Alarmed by his behaviour, the woman cried for help. Though the staff at the clinic rushed to her aid, the man fled the scene.

Based on her complaint, the Kotturpuram police registered a case under various IPC sections and also Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman (TNPHW) Act, and arrested P Ellappan of the same neighbourhood. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

In the next case, the police arrested a software engineer who allegedly flashed at a woman in Perungudi.

Last week, a woman techie working in Taramani went to a temple in Tiruvanmiyur. As she was returning home, a man flashed at her and made sexual gestures. While the woman evaded him and walked home, he allegedly stalked her after which she filed a police complaint.

Thoraipakkam police perused over 50 CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood and zeroed in on the accused, identified as Ahmed Riyas (29), also a software engineer, working at a private firm on OMR. The accused is married, said the police, adding that his wife and their oneyear-old child stay at Arakkonam.

In the other incident, the bike taxi driver, Yogeshwaran, was previously employed in a television channel and was terminated about six months ago, after which he started work as a bike taxi driver.

On Friday evening, a 17-year-old girl was returning home after her tuition when Yogeshwaran allegedly followed her and molested her on a deserted stretch. Investigations revealed that he had indulged in several cases of molestation, targeting women and girls on deserted streets.

Both the accused were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
