Intercontinental Cup: India off to flying start

BHUBANESWAR: A dominant India struck two quick first-half goals to beat lower-ranked Mongolia 2-0 and begin its Intercontinental Cup campaign on a winning note at the Kalinga Stadium here on Friday. Sahal Abdul Samad and Lallianzuala Chhangte scored in the second and 14th minute respectively as the 101st-ranked India emerged victorious over its opponent that is placed 183rd. India made a fast start and was 2-0 up inside 15 minutes. Midfielder Anirudh Thapa found himself clear on the right flank and pulled the ball back into middle of the penalty box. The Mongolian goalkeeper got a hand to it, but Sahal was there to fire home with a low left-footed effort. Thapa was involved yet again as Sandesh Jhinghan’s header off a corner rebounded off a Mongolian defender on the goal-line and Chhangte was in hand to poke the ball home.
