Bike taxis not permitted in state, says Transport Minister Sivasankar

COIMBATORE: Transport Minister SS Sivasankar on Friday said bike taxis were not permitted in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, the Minister said the state government has not recognised bikes to be operated as rental vehicles.

“Bikes are for individual use and cannot be allowed for rental operations. Regulations were not framed yet to allow bike taxis. Generally, the government should be paid for operating rental vehicles,” he said.

Further, the Minister reiterated that as far as the Tamil Nadu government is concerned, bike taxis are not permitted and police are acting on this. “The state government has allotted funds to purchase 2,000 more buses, while efforts were initiated to purchase 2,400 buses with the funding of a German bank. New buses will come into operation within six months,” he said.

Minister Sivasankar said an online bus ticketing system will be introduced in MTC buses in Chennai. “It will soon be implemented on a trial basis in other places also,” he added. Stating that even though bus fares were on the rise in neighbouring states, Tamil Nadu had not increased the fares.

Earlier, the Minister in the presence of Electricity Minister V Senthilbalaji distributed monetary benefits of Rs 14.5 crore to 518 retired staff of the transport corporation. They also opened an air-conditioned retiring room for the staff.
