Sindhu in Madrid Spain Masters final

MADRID: PV Sindhu reached her first final of the year after she eked out a straight-game victory over Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min at Madrid Spain Masters Super 300 here on Saturday.

The second-seeded Sindhu toiled for 48 minutes to pull off a 24-22, 22-20 win in an intensely fought women’s singles semi-final match. Sindhu had come into the last-four match with a perfect (4-0) head-to head record against Min.

Trailing 15-20 in the first game, Sindhu showed immense fighting spirit to save as many as seven game points and take the opener 24-22. The Indian used the body smash to great effect and converted the only game point opportunity that she had.

In the second game, Sindhu trailed 1-4 before opening up a five-point lead (11-6) with another stunning turnaround. Min later played a gorgeous drop shot to level the score at 17-17. Sindhu then had two match points but Min managed to save both of them before driving one wide, giving the Indian her third match point. This time, Sindhu made no errors as Min found the net.

With the victory, Sindhu qualified for her first final since playing in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games title decider last year.
