Elangovan likely to file papers today

COIMBATORE: Candidates of Congress, two factions of AIADMK and AMMK are likely to file their nominations to contest in the Erode East bypoll on Friday.

“DMK alliance candidate EVKS Elangovan will file his nomination on Friday,” said S Muthusamy, Minister for Housing and Urban Development to reporters here.

Further, he said that Chief Minister MK Stalin, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and MP Kanimozhi are expected to visit Erode soon for campaigning. Muthusamy was accompanied by Ministers KN Nehru, SM Nasar, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and other DMK functionaries during their door-todoor campaign in the constituency. Meanwhile, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) candidate Menaka Navaneethan filed her nomination to contest in the bypolls on Thursday.

She came along with her supporters by carrying sugarcane to file the nomination. The NTK cadre broke into an argument with police as they were stopped 200 metres away from the corporation office. They were denied permission to enter the corporation office with sugarcane.

So far, around 20 persons, including DMDK candidate has filed the nominations for the upcoming by-election. A large number of cops were deployed at the corporation office as a precaution. The last date for filing nomination is February 7.
