AHMEDABAD: Double centurion Ruturaj Gaikwad blazed his way into the record books, smashing seven sixes in a 43-run over, as Maharashtra outplayed Uttar Pradesh by 58 runs here on Monday to storm into the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-finals.

Opting to bowl, Uttar Pradesh was in for a shocker as Maharashtra skipper Ruturaj went hammer and tongs at the Motera B Ground during his unbeaten knock of 220 that came off 159 balls (10 fours, 16 sixes). His masterful innings propelled Maharashtra to 330 for five.

In the run-chase, opening batter Aryan Juyal led Uttar Pradesh’s charge with a 143-ball 159 (18 fours, 3 sixes) but it was not enough as the team folded for 272 in 47.4 overs. Medium pacer Rajvardhan Hangargekar (5/53) picked up his maiden five-wicket haul and was the wrecker-in-chief for Maharashtra.

The penultimate over of Maharashtra’s innings was the most eventful one as Ruturaj unleashed his fury against left-arm spinner Shiva Singh, blasting him for seven sixes in a row, thanks to a no ball, while creating a List A record.

The first ball was a low full-toss and Ruturaj smoked it over deep mid-wicket. The second one was hit straight down the ground, while he cleared the deep square leg boundary for his third maximum in the over. The fourth delivery was smacked over long-off, while the fifth, a no ball, was played almost in the same region. The batter then took full advantage of the free hit by hammering it over long-on and reaching his double century.

The seventh and final ball was smashed over deep mid-wicket as the Uttar Pradesh spinner returned with expensive figures of 0/88 from his nine overs.
