Cosmo saves Rs 11.49 crore/year for Metro: Official

As a cost cutting method in disinfecting trains, CMRL during the peak of COVID in 2020 introduced Micro Plasma Oxidation Technology (Cosmo), an aqueous-based disinfecting agent that is twice as effective as a chemical agent. Taking it a step further, CMRL has employed Cosmo as an air-based disinfecting agent. And officials say, the results have been more effective than using chemicals. According to the CMRL department, it costs Rs 800 for disinfecting a single train. And for disinfecting 42 trains throughout the year, the department has spent Rs 1.20 crore. However, through the Cosmo method, CMRL has only shelled out 6.04 lakh/year. An official with the CMRL Rolling stock department said, “Cosmo saves us nearly 11.49 crore/year. Using chemical-based disinfectants is not only expensive, but bleach stains the surface of trains, also leaving a strong odour.” Officials add that Cosmo is being used in air-conditioning to purify the environment. Besides being sustainable, clean and safe, Cosmo can be produced on site on demand, they claim.
